Internships



Hadden Fellowship

Fellowship Description:
The Institute of World Affairs sponsors part-time and full-time positions for students in the fields of conflict resolution, international development, and international politics.  At this time, we are only accepting applications from students at the graduate level.  Qualified applicants will have a strong interest in the field of international peacebuilding and a desire to work on focused projects in the field.  Applicants should be fluent in English and have solid writing and communication skills.  As a Hadden Fellow, students gain experience in both the theory and practice of designing and administering conflict resolution programs in divided societies.  Fellows are expected to contribute to the design and execution of both new and ongoing projects.  The work also involves researching current events and writing material for Institute programs and publications.  Administrative support is kept to a minimum.

Internships at the Institute are unpaid and do not provide housing.  We accept internship applications for the spring (January - May), summer (June - August), and fall (August - December) semesters, and encourage students to apply at least two months prior to their desired semester for fullest consideration. There is no formal application form; interested applicants should send their resume or curriculum vitae to info@iwa.org with a cover letter indicating their interest, field of academic experience, and approximate start and end dates as well as the number of hours available per week.  Please also include a brief (2-3 page) writing sample.  Applications may also be sent by mail to the address below.

General Responsibilities:

  • Research current events in conflict resolution and international affairs
  • Assist in the development of new program proposals for the Institute
  • Help coordinate seminars and lectures conducted by the Institute
  • Write project summaries for funders, foundations, and general publication
  • Help maintain the content of the web site and contribute to IWA publications

Qualifications:

  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Graduate student in the field of international conflict resolution, international development, or international politics
  • Previous field experience a plus
  • Additional language skills a plus
  • Ability to actively address projects and work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to commit to at least 16 hours per week for the duration of the semester
  • The desire to promote mutual understanding, reconciliation, and the peaceful resolution of conflict throughout the world

Washington Semester Program

The Institute of World Affairs (IWA) accepts a small number of undergraduate students under the Washington Semester Program. We believe that these students will  gain the hands-on experience and contacts they need to move their career forward through a professional D.C. internship at IWA.  For more information on the Washington Semester Program, please see the internship coordinator at your home campus.  To apply with us, applicants should send a resume, cover letter, and a brief (2-3 page) writing sample to the address below.
